So as an early admit to Brown, I’m curious about any and all opportunities available to me on campus. One of my questions is whether it is possible for me to learn how to play an instrument, more specifically, the violin once at Brown. I used to play when I was younger (elementary school) but unfortunately, I could not afford to pay for lessons beyond elementary school nor could I purchase my own, personal violin (the lessons were given through my school for free). Thus, I stopped playing. However, I want to be able to pick up on the violin once again in college and though I forgot most of my skills, I wondered if there are any opportunities for me to take lessons? I am not declaring in an art or theater concentration (but rather a science). Is there maybe a club for that?

I’m pretty sure that you can take lessons (probably for a small fee), at least in the orchestral instruments. [Brown University Department of Music](<a href=“Music | Brown University”>Music | Brown University) might be a good starting point.

The on-campus lessons through the Applied Music Program are mostly for people who’ve already been playing for a while, but I’m sure you could find a student or someone in the Providence community to teach you. The Music Department would be very helpful at finding someone for you.

At your level of experience, learn from another student. Pick someone who is technically sound (proof can be awards at competitions or diplomas) and who you can get along with, either freshman or sophomore. Teachers around that area will probably charge you 60$-100$/hr. You don’t need to pay that much to a student and as a beginner or beginner-intermediate I’m pretty sure that some of trained musicians will be more than what you need at the moment. After RD decisions are out, you can facebook contact someone. They should probably even have spare instruments they used earlier which they can bring along.
