So I've been interested in the Arts Adventure Learning Community for the past couple of weeks. Has anyone here been a member of this or any other LC or does anyone know someone who has? Was it fun? Was it an amazing experience? Did it suck? Would you do it again? Also, they say the LCs are first come first serve, so do they tend to fill up quickly?

My D was in the Whitman LC as a freshmen and absolutely loved it. You can participate as much or as little as you want to but she loved the instant bonding and activities. Her closest friends are all from this freshmen experience. And you get to know what dorm you will be in!!

Thanks for the insight, Twoparent! It’s nice to hear that these communities form strong bonds without being overbearing, and it sounds like a great experience! :)

I am still wondering, though, if I can wait a few weeks on enrolling or if I should do it quickly so that I can secure a spot in a LC? Syracuse is where I think I will probably end up, but I’m still kind of marinating on the offer BU gave me, and I still haven’t heard back from Fordham. I think I will know for sure about Syracuse within a week or two. I hope the LCs don’t fill up before then!

My S is a freshman in the Outdoor Pursuits Learning Community. He really likes his LC and the outdoor adventures, including going bobsledding at Lake Placid. I thought there would be an extra fee for the activities, but so far we have not had to pay for any of the activities. THey must be built into his dorm fee. If you look on other threads, you will see some comments that LC kids and non-LC kids may be housed on the same floor and that the LC kids may seem cliquish. The kids do have something in common and do organized activities together and so they may bond more easily. My S also reports that while he knows some kids in his major who have roommate issues, he is not aware of any roommate issues in his LC. My S would say that his LC is a lot of fun - but what’s not to like about outdoor activities in upper NY State!
