What's it like to be in one of the learning communities? Do you have to live and take classes with all the same people? Also, what kind of people usually opt to join one of these?

Not all learning computers require you live in the specific dorms. I'm in UROP but not UIR. If your in RC (is than an MLC? lol) then there are classes you have to take and you live in East Quad and what not. Look through the various MLC's. People join w/e they're interested in. I wanted to try out research for the year so I chose UROP.

I think RC is considered a living community. Different MLCs do different things and some have required class that you have to take, HSSP (Health Sciences Scholars Program) has a two semester class that everyone has to take that's worth 2 credits per. Alice Llyod Scholars has mandatory plays, english classes and other stuff to go to. UIR people get the research packet a day early, I think. Not sure about the others.

You don't have to take the classes with the same people but, if you're in career related ones like HSSP you probably will since most pre-health majors have to take the usualy natural sciences courses. The MLCs offer an opportunity to live with other people who are interested in the same things as you and sort of "shrinks" the large student body. It's a lot easier to start study groups or find out more information about the field that you want to work in. Also, most of the living ones are in Central Campus and you get spots reserved in certain classes (I got english!).

You should check out the website to see if there's anything that you might like.

UIR kids all take UC 104. Intro to Research (an easy 1-credit pass/fail class) in the fall in place of the no-credit (if you're for credit-researcher) peer advisor meetings that are every other week. You do have to attend it winter term (and it counts for credit if you're on work-study).
