To any current student:
Would you recommend joining a learning community? I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it or not.

I’d only recommend doing it if you are REALLY REALLY passionate about the topic. If you aren’t, I wouldn’t recommend doing it, becuase the people not tha passionate about it- end up thinking it’s a pain.

I personally am NOT in one, but I applied to Healthy Living & Leadership. They pick them “randomly” apparently (although I am sure they try to diversify these communities from all areas of the US, backgrounds, etc.). I really WOULD have been genuinely interested in Healthy Living, so it would have been worth it for me.

Bottomline: It’s worth it if YOU REALLY have passion for it. Otherwise, it just ends up being a waste of time.

If you decide you really don’t want to do it, there are PLENTY of other oppurtunities to explore on campus that will enrich your experience here and be attractive to employers. No way is a learning community “essential” to a great college experience, but it can be beneficial if your heart is in it.

will a learning community be helpful on a resume or attractive to grad schools??? for instance, will the healthy living learning community be attractive to med schools?

I’m in the healthy living learning community. I dont think its going to be particularly helpful on resume’s, however what WILL be helpful is the fact that I will be applying to be a student facilitator during my junior year. As far as the workload…very manageable. The actual LC meets for 1 hr once a week, and is largely discussion based. The only real work we had was filling out a weekly behavior log, and a survey at the beginning of each week. Plus sides: the LC dorms are by far the best. Biggest rooms, air conditioning, and co-ed. I really feel that the dorm and the LCs themselves have become so close and i have made a lot of close friends because of it. PM me if you want more info!

novagirl if we don’t join a learning community what other dorms are similar to those you mentioned?
