My name is Shane Carman and I currently am in eighth grade. I have an interest in screenwriting and am beginning to look at some college options. Even though I have a long time until college, I would still like to look because I am so interested in screenwriting and would like to learn to write professionally. I do have some learning disabilities like having Tourette Syndrome and being foreign language exempt. Would something like being foreign language exempt prevent me from being able to go to SUNY Purchase? I am deeply worried that because of my foreign language exemption, I will not be able to attend college. Many of the schools I have looked into require that you have taken at least 2 years of foreign language in High School.

Thank you for helping me and I hope you have a nice day,

The language exemption probably won’t be a problem in terms of college admissions. But be advised that b/c colleges are not obliged to provide the same accommodations as high schools, the fact that pursuant to you IEP or 504 plan your current foreign lang exemption will not necessarily exempt you from a college’s general ed, distribution or other graduation requirements, which in the case of state schools often includes foreign lang. OTOH, some school do not require foreign lang study and some schools will grant foreign lang exemption for certain documented disabilities; you will have to check with the disability offices at each college/uni.

You will also get far more responses if you post your question on the learning disability board.
