I am a male in colorado and i attend a competative boarding school. I am in the top 15 in my class and i have between a 3.8 and 4.0. I have really really great e.c's and i am class prez. I recieved a 30 on the act without prep. I plan to take the test again and aim for a 32+. I will write an excelent essay and i will get good recs. I am considdering applying early to yale, upenn(legacy), or harvard.

I have a ADD/Dysgrafia (not the best speller). I get extra time on all tests i take. How will my learning disibilities effect my chances at the ivies and other top schools. Will it hurt my chances, help them, or have not effect?

Hi, I responded to this on the LD board, but thought it would be helpful here if LD students who have been admitted to various colleges could talk about whether their LD came up in the application process, and how they fared with admissions. Not only would this help Baller137, but many other students and parents could benefit from knowledge of your experiences!

Schools will make special accomendations for learning disabilities. I've heard that some colleges like people with learning disabilities because they have to concentrate more on learning in order to learn.

I disclosed my disability in my application. I think my guidance counselor mentioned it, and I also had a supplemental recomendation from a resource room teacher who helped me out a ton. I think it definately explained the classes I took and got me into some schools I would have never dreamed of getting into.

It actually may help you get in. With your high GPA, rank, and (I assume?) test scores, you will prove to admissions officers that you have overcome your disability.

Having an LD sure helped me get into college. In high school i had a 3.3 unweighted gpa and a 1080 on my SAT's (this was with the old SAT). When i was applying to colleges my mom remembered that one of my LD tutors had suggested that i should apply to berkeley because they have a good LD program. I thought she was nuts but i decided to apply as a joke. And low and behold, i got in. I was really confused because a normal applicant could not have gotten in to berkeley with that SAT score. So i had a meeting with my LD councilor when i got to school and she said that when you apply to a UC and you say you have an LD they send the application to the LD office and they compare how bad your LD is to your grades etc. So some schools are awsome and really look at students with LD's. I would also suggest Yale, there is a woman there who is doing alot of work with students with LD's.
ps. berkeley has an awsome LD program, in addition to extended time you get free note takers, free books on tape (including text books), and they also have a program where they scan your homework and a computer reads it back to you, you also get first choice in classes (students with disabilities and athlets get to choose before everyone else)

yah its true....I did hear berkely had a good program..im ADHD w/ a mild PDD and iti would be auesome if i was instate for Berkley..but even if i had a chance i wouldnt be able to my parents want me to stay on east coast within a few hour drive meaning...no south of dc and north or anything of boston(dc and boston have colleges i like so they closed the line there) this is due to other medical conditions id rather not discuss
