How long would it take to learn spanish? I want to learn spanish in college and was wondering how long it would take? My friends in high school took it for four years and don't know how to speak spanish, why is that? Also, do those porgrams like rosetta stone work? If so, why do people take year classes when they can learn through a cd the fast way?

I don’t know about college, but four years of high school Spanish should give you some level of fluency, enough to hold a conversation, anyways.

Im guessing they didn’t pay much attention.

I’ve been in spanish for 8 years and I still can’t really speak it because we never really practiced speaking it. I can read it, but not speak it. My teacher couldn’t really speak it well until she moved to Mexico for a year.

What do you mean by “learn spanish”? How much do you want to know? I’d say that within 2-3 classes you should be able to hold a converstation (if you have a good teacher and practice).

The reason why people prefer the class over the cd is so you can have true interaction. THe CD can’t tell you if you are pronouncing it wrong and you can’t really ask it questions. It might be good if you are just planning a trip there and want to know the basics (bathroom, food, etc), but for actual conversation it wouldn’t be so great.
