So I'm already planning my Thanksgiving travel, and I see that our last day of class will be on 11/26 before the break starts. I don't know what the deal is like at Cornell; do very few students show up on that last day of class? Or is it a safer bet just to show up on the last day? At the school I was at last year, the professors cancelled classes because they expected almost no one to show up... any insight greatly appreciated!

My professors have either canceled class or told us that they did not expect us to come, but they would be in class incase some of us did. Professors are usually nice enough not to schedule anything important/mandatory for the day before Thanksgiving break, giving you the option to miss class if it's not canceled.

This has been my experience with ILR professors, so it might be different for people in more intense/competitive majors.

it depends on the professor. I've had some who "canceled" classes (though technically they are not allowed to), and I've had some who had mandatory, special lectures with things that will pop up on the final and he told us not to tell anyone who wasn't there for that lecture.

what classes are you taking this fall?

ILRCB 1100, ILRHR 2600, ILROB 1220, and ILRST 2100. Just checked my schedule on JTF, and I'm not too pleased with it overall...

whats wrong with that?

you're an ILRie...it's better to get through the classes you need first before attempting others D:

why not? all of those classes are pretty easy As (I thought all of the intro ILR classes were easy As). and you can afford to miss the lectures before thanksgiving break if your professors don't cancel class.

Oh no, I'm not complaining about my classes, just that I have three lectures basically in a row on Mondays and Wednesdays, with only a short time for lunch! :)

But how are Hausknecht for HR260 and Velleman for ST210? I've heard mixed things... all my other professors sound phenomenal (Daniel for CB110 and Goncalo for OB122).

Anyways, I think I'm just going to book my ticket on 11/26 because it looks like I can always change it 24-hours before to 11/25 for no extra charge. Better safe than sorry.

haha, oh. well, that's understandable. out of those professors I've only had Velleman, for stats. He's slightly boring/in love with the stupid program (activstats) he wrote for the statistics book that is unusable to the normal person/strangely fascinated by statistics, but he's a nice guy and his class is easy. some of the material is kind of abstract because the class is not math-intensive, and many of the concepts in statistics rely on math. you're allowed to bring 8" x 11 1/2" cheat sheets covered in any information of your choosing to each exam: 1 for the first prelim, 2 for the second one and 3 for the final. it's kind of a joke, I guess, but it's nice for your GPA if you can tolerate how boring it is/how little you're actually learning about stats because of the ILR school's aversion towards math.

Hausknecht is great, I had him for HR260 as well. The class is really easy, and so is the midterm. The final ended up being pretty tricky though.

In what classes do profs give you secret info about the final-- science classes?

I went to orgo the wednesday that break began.....Ganem gave a regular lecture and went over stuff he said he "might" test on the final. Of course, my memory is shot and I can't remember if it was on the final or not.

Yeah professors tend to say that but in my experience they don't follow through (coming from an engineer including my science classes). And odds are you will have at least one friend who will be going class and won't mind sharing their notes (unless all you have are crazy, selfish friends of course)

Yeah, I usually skip all classes on the day before a vacation; no one keeps tabs on how often you show up to large lectures anyway. If you have any small classes, like writing seminar, I'd check with the teacher first, but usually you're granted 3 absences a semester (I don't know how big ILR classes usually are; I'm an engineer).

I usually informed my professor for smaller classes and didn't bother for larger ones. I left early for Thanksgiving last year, and also arrived back a day late from Spring break, and neither caused problems.

I always go to class the day before. Nothing says "I'm not taking this class seriously" like missing that day. Barring extreme travel circumstances, of course.

Actually, I can think of a LOT of things that say "I'm not taking this class seriously" more clearly. =)

^^And I've seen 75% of them!!
