Hi! I am currently a Sophomore, and was in debate since freshman year. I really liked debate freshman year, and even went to camp(for congressional debate). But now sophomore year… I’m not sure. I like going to tournaments to meet friends at other schools, and I like to speak however… I am really unconfident. I got to finals, and only spoke once, leading me to get no state points in a relatively easy round. I find that when I write speeches, I tend to procrastinate and waste more time. Not to mention the amount of time used in debate tournaments, leaving me to finish everything on Sunday. However, I have a lot of friends in debate, and It makes me feel like I belong somewhere. On the other hand, I have found a extreme passion in business now, and want to pursue FBLA and start my own business. Do you think I should keep debate and try to do both, or leave it, and just pursue my new passion in business?
I loved FBLA. My first year I got first place at my district level competition and 2nd place at my state level competition. It’s really fun and you get to meet great people. Some events are more competitive than others and some states are more competitive than others, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t do well. I think if you can manage to do both FBLA and Debate, then you should. You seemed to be interested in debate, so don’t give up if you don’t do as well as you want to. Keep at it and you’ll get better over time. Try writing speeches together with your friends in debate. That environment where you feel like you belong may become your motivation.
@QMusic thank you! however, I don’t know if I really like debate anymore. I don’t like to write speeches nor talk about politics.
Give it until end of first semester. If you still feel the same way than quit, just don’t give up too quickly. Good friends are not easy to find.
@QMusic what event did you happen to do in FBLA your first year, by the way?
@Rollout oh ok, Thank you!
@blast540 Introduction to Business Communication. It’s mainly just stuff you would learn in English class.
