To be in National Honor Society, I had to be in two clubs every year at school. Freshman year I joined Interact and SADD, just to fulfill the requirement, but for the next three years I found two clubs that I really was passionate about, and got leadership in one.

Would it look better to not put down Interact and SADD for 9th grade? I don't want to turn my app into a laundry list, and does it not look good to quit 2 clubs after just one year? Or would it look worse to have nothing down for ninth grade, schoolwise?

Thanks !

When people say “colleges don’t want to see a laundry list”, the point is not that doing ECs you didn’t really care about is inherently bad. The problem comes when you start thinking that listing a lot of clubs and such on your application is the only important thing, and that’s not the case here. Putting them down won’t hurt you.

I don’t think it would necessarily be a bad thing to put them down, but I also understand only wanting to put down clubs that have been significant to you. Personally, I’m not going to put down French club and NHS on my app because I don’t want to clutter my app and detract from more significant activities.

If you are providing an activity list in the additional information section, then you can put down these two clubs at the end, after you list your more significant activities. Don’t let them take up the space of activities that are otherwise more important.

Okay, I definitely get all that, thanks! I have four or five activities that I’m strongly involved in and passionate about, so it’s not really vital for me that I include these two clubs. Definitely don’t want unnecessary clutter. I’ll ask my guidance counselor for a conclusive thought.
