Do students HAVE to leave residence halls during breaks such as Thanksgiving, Winter Holidays, ETC? If I attend college in upstate NY, it's a bit harder to go back home to my family in NJ. I think it would be a waste if I left for Thanksgiving and to come back on campus 6 days later.

BTW Has anyone taken the Amtrak? Would it be easier if I just drove for 5 hours? What's the best mode of transportation?

A lot of schools let people stay on campus in their rooms over Thanksgiving. Winter break is different and it depends where you go to school. Most people do try to get home for the holidays. It’s mostly folks who are international or who live across the country who consider staying. Public transport is an option, but I would think that from most NY schools you’d be able to find someone driving to NJ for the holidays and would be able to catch a ride.

You should check the rules of the particular college as they vary. Typical is the closure of the dorms during at least the winter break but they may have one dorm open somewhere on campus in which you can stay.;

Yeah like it isn’t a big deal if you miss thanksgiving but doubt you would be able to or want to stay at college for a whole month during winter break for a five hour drive. I know a lot of.people that live farther than that and come home for all the breaks. I have a lot of friends upstate at like Cornell and Vassar and there are trains you can take home to get back to jersey if you parents don’t want to pick you up. So you should anticipate coming home from the breaks since even my friends who go to schools in California and Midwest do.

Halls at my campus are open during Thanksgiving and Spring break, but the dining halls and bus lines are closed. You must leave during the winter break, as they lock the doors to the buildings the week after finals. Plus, why would you wanna stay when giving the choice of home?

They close the dorms at my campus for Thanksgiving and Winter Break, so you can’t stay. It changes from college to college though; check your college’s rules.

Yeah, I’m only talking about missing Thanksgiving break cause it would be a waste of money for me to go back home and then come back a few days later.

Would anyone know what’s the best mode of transportation?
