Hey everyone - so I'm currently a sophmore at SUNY Stony Brook desperately looking to get out. I mean, we DID make #3 most unhappy students on princetonreview! I'm definitely not alone in the dislike of the school. As for the details, that could be a whole new thread.

Stats and stuff - 3.59 GPA (hard science classes mostly though, one C in calc over the summer ruined it), 2 lab assistant positions (one was 2 months, the other is 3 months and counting), I'm a chemistry TA, I volunteer at the hospital on weekends, and I had a student government position first semester. I think I have 2 solid professor reccs, one from science and one from history.

Anyway, I'm a chemistry/econ major and I've applied for junior fall transfers to the CAS of:

UVA
UNC Chapel Hill
Duke
Brown
Vanderbilt

My HS stats are fairly atrocious, with some D's to scar my transcript. In the end I probably made in the low 3's... but it's been a very long time since HS and I'm hoping they won't care too much since I'm doing much better now. 1200/1600 SATs from May 2007 (they're quite ancient, and at least UNC doesn't even require me to send those).

I'd be extremely happy with any school on the list, but I think my chances at Duke and Brown especially will be quite low since they're not very transfer-friendly... right?

i love when people leave stony mostly because i hated it SO much there

anyway, i think your gpa is still on the low end, though if most of your grades are good and that C is the only bad part of your app (i got a C in che 132 rawr. also messed up my gpa hanson grrrr)

i think most of those are reach-ish, but duke and brown being the highest reaches. if you’re desparate to leave stony, i would throw in some matches or safeties just to be safe.

there are actually 3 former SBers including me who came in with the spring transfer class. so weird, right?? 1 was a GT though. still.

also just realized i never actually finished my sentence when i was explaining that C thing. if you want to explain it in the “additional info” section of your app, that might help. say something about taking on too much at once or whatever

yeah I said I was going through personal/family issues at the time (which was the case). Anyway, from what I’ve heard Stonybrookers apply en masse to Cornell! lol

What were your stats if you dont mind me asking?

haha definitely. stony brook is the WORST. it’s where dreams go to die.

my stats when i applied were 3.49 with 58 units completed and 16 in progress (3.52 when i got here), which is low for corny, but my essays kicked butt hehe.

yeah, well that’s part of the reason why i hated it. the name means nothing outside of the tristate area and even then you sometimes have people being like “what’s a stony brook?”

reasons i hate: not prestigious, parking sucks (i commuted), classes are huge, class selection is really limited, profs are more interested in their research than teaching, it’s really freaking ugly and the only they have going for them is one pathetic fountain which shows up in every picture of the school and is on for about 2 months the entire year, the food is overpriced and disgusting, the people there are also really sucky (no offense… but you want to leave, so obviously you rock haha) though there are a few cool kids. UGH i could go on and on and on.

Ironically - I’m 100% with you on all those reasons lol. I’d also like to add that the English, Business and Economics departments suck especially bad, and I actually like those subjects. It also boasts diversity, but it’s like… WAY TOO MUCH diversity. To the point where the school feels like a a refugee camp in east asia.
