leaving the ethnicity section blank?

So, if you leave ethnicity blank, are you just assumed to be a non-URM? At MIT and also other schools, do adcoms try to figure out your race from your name, parents' country of origin, and other biographical info?

Check out this thread that an MIT admission officer posted: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/981313-how-should-you-report-your-race-ethnicity.html

Also, look at this blog entry posted on mitadmissions.org: [MIT Admissions | Blog Entry: “Should I include my ethnicity on the MIT Application?”](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/affirmative_action/should_i_include_my_ethnicity.shtml)

Those links would probably better answer your question
