Leaving UT, advice?

Hello everyone, I am a freshman at UT currently enrolled in McCombs about to start my spring semester. Here's the situation: I'm considering leaving here and going to UT Dallas because UT has been financially and emotionally stressful on my family. So I have pondered about living by home to save money and ease some burdens. BUT I want to finish school at UT Austin.

The major I want to pursue is obviously in business but more specifically, accounting. I have taken 2 years of accounting at my high school and enjoyed it very much. I also have relations with a person who owns an accounting firm in Dallas and has offered me an internship at anytime I needed. I want to get my core classes out of the way at UT Dallas. At the end of this year I will have 42 credit hours.

So here are my questions: Is it worth it going to UT Dallas? I know their business school isn't that bad. I am not too familiar yet with the accounting related programs at McCombs. I do know about the 5 year program for earning MPA + BBA simultaneously but as an accounting major isn't it better to get an MBA? So I"ll be doing 6 years right? If I want to finish school at McCombs, can I just finish graduate school or should I get my bachelor's there? Most importantly, how hard will it be to get back to McCombs after leaving and coming back? I'm pretty sure I can get back into UT but I know being re-admitted into McCombs will be the real challenge.

Sorry to hear about your personal situation. I do applaud your responsible approach to your family finances. It really is sad that someone as good as you should find yourself in this situation. It breaks ones heart.

Now, here’s what I recommend:

Go sit outside the office of the undergraduate Dean at McCombs until you get a firm appointment to see her.

When you do, share all this finnancial situation info with her and see what she recommends. If they are unable to find a way out for you to stay at UT, then ensure you have her commitment before you leave UT to approach her directly when you are ready to come back, assuming you do well at UTD (where I am confident you will excel).

Remember that Accounting is the only business major that leads to a license/ceritification. As a result, for Accounting professionals, once you pass the CPA, where you got your degree is not as important. Any internships will help in mnay ways, so go for that too. Ace the classes at UTD and that will always open doors for you later should you want to get an MBA.

If your personal time and other commitment situations allow, double major in Finance. In my opinion (I don’t expect others to agree), a Finance or Accounting major, without true strength in the other related major, will always be SLIGHTLY handicapped in the real world, if they do not have real depth in the other major. The two are intertwined. I have seen this personally over the years, with senior exec coworker peers, as well as my direct reports and others in my org. (Please, I don’t want any banter on this. It’s just an opinion. Take it for what it’s worth, or chuck it in the bin.)

My advice… Don’t leave UT Austin. You can’t transfer into McCombs if you have over 90 credit hours. Just take some courses at ACC maybe?
