okay...so was checking out the schedule online...and i want to clear a few things up...

when signing up for a class, do you enroll in the lecture and then in one discussion section? there's one lecture and tons of discussion sections...do you only enroll in one or multiple?

and what do you do during the discussion section? do you get graded for participating? attendance?

One discussion section per lecture class. You'll enroll in the discussion you want which will automatically place you in the lecture.

Different classes weigh discussion differently- some are incorporated into your grade and some are not, or at least not significantly. Sometimes you'll get projects or assignments, sometimes it's just attendance, sometimes they don't care about either and it's just an extension of the lecture. Just depends.

for north campus classes, discussion is factored into your grade and attendance is mandatory. you will likely have actual discussions on the topics covered in lecture and the readings you have to do. participation is usually graded.

for south campus classes, discussions are not graded and attendance is not required, although you might have quizzes that will be held in your discussions or you hand in/get back homework in discussion. most will just do practice problems and examples and/or go over the lecture topics again, like a mini lecture.

of course, this varies form class to class and professor to professor, but that's generally what goes on. your syllabus will outline everything, as it should.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with VTECaddict's post. I have had maybe one or two North Campus class where attendance at discussion was mandatory (and this is coming from a North Campus major).
As for South Campus, there are many more classes where discussion is de facto mandatory due to quizzes held during discussion or because there are labs to do during discussion (physics classes). In north campus classes, there really isn't anything going on to make it mandatory, and they are very rarely, if ever, factored into your grade.

well i was just going by my experience. in the north campus classes i have taken, attendance was mandatory (roll was taken) and participation in discussion was part of our final grade.

and i DID say they were generalizations. yes, there are quizzes in south campus classes, but mine were announced so you didnt really have to go on the non-quiz days.

but hey, what do i know. i've only taken 3 quarters of classes at UCLA. shrug

In all the south campus classes that I have taken, the only discussions that were mandatory were the LS discussions.

Incarus, which physics series are you talking about? For the 6 series, discussion is definitely NOT mandatory - in fact even if you did attend, it was completely useless. The only thing that was actually mandatory was the lab section that was separate from the actual discussion. Perhaps the 1 series is different?

Anyway, for the North campus classes, I think it'd be more truthful to say majority of the GEs on that side of campus have mandatory discussions. In my own experience, I think I've had all but one class on North campus that required section attendence.

Nope you're right about the physics discussion - I had forgotten that lab was separate from discussion. And yes, discussion was worthless for physics... I never went (maybe why I forgot about it :))

But in Chem classes I've taken, there have been quizzes (sometimes every week) in discussion.

I'm really surprised you had a similar experience to VTEC with north campus classes and mandatory discussion. I'm a philosophy major, and I seriously can't remember any north campus classes where attendance at discussion section was checked or made mandatory in any way. I know because I skip discussion all the time for north campus classes and there are never any repurcussions on my grade. For almost every north campus class I've taken with a discussion section, the syllabus usually says "discussion section is not mandatory, but highly recommended to enhance your understanding of lecture blah blah..."

But hey, if thats your experience then thats your experience.

My advice to first year students is to go to both lecture and discussion until you are absolutely positive you will be able to get away with not going.

Lol... that's funny... the only GE that I had from north campus that didn't have the mandatory discussion was a philosophy class....
