Between Lechner & McFadden Honors halls which one do you prefer? It seems like Lechner is a newer dorm. When we visited TAMU, all dorms kind of looked like it could use a refurbishing!

^Agreed. When we went to SHIP, I was given an opportunity to tour the dorms (as a parent, on a parent tour), and my son (the SHIP participant) was not! So he didn’t see any dorms at all. And I saw two pretty ratty dorms. I thought that was odd – especially that the students were not shown the dorms. (Wish we could have seen the honors dorms.)

When my son applied last year (he’s a freshman now), the housing application did not list McFadden, Lechner and Clements separately. It just offered “honors” housing. So unless TAMU has changed the process, you can’t choose which honors dorm you want. (Most freshman get Lechner or McFadden, but there are a few in Clements as well). My son wanted Lechner but got McFadden. He likes it and is planning to live in Honors housing next year as well.

^I’m pretty sure that this year the kids can pick McFadden (which also means Lechner) and Clements for Honors housing, and that’s it. In other words, you’re right. You can’t pick between the two, Lechner and McFadden. You can choose McFadden, and then take Lechner if it’s assigned in McFadden’s place. Or you can choose Clements.

Oh, now I remember! The option on the application said McFadden, so I called A&M to ask how my son would select Lechner. They explained that the application listed McFadden, but that is short for McFadden/Lechner Honors Community. You select that and then get what you get. Freshman can’t choose Clements, because that is the upperclassmen honors dorm, but there is some overflow of freshmen honors students in Clements this year.

^Actually, this year, freshman CAN choose Clements. In fact, they’re supposed to choose Clements as their second choice if they want honors housing. I guess it’s different this year.

That’s interesting, and makes it likely that they will get in honors housing if they want it. Great!

Clements is gear toward upperclassman. However most honor Sophomore started to live off campus. The population of Junior and Senior is even less. So, the over flow do end up in Clements. Even non-honor as well if space is available.

McFadden has the newer furniture in the rooms. I don’t know if Lechner is getting them next year or not. I’d say McFadden is a little bit less “nerdy” though.

As previous posters have mentioned, it might be a moot point, but I can mention a couple of things. I live in McFadden, and this was the first year we got WiFi. I don’t think Lechner has WiFi, and I’m not sure if they’re going to get it for next year.

Lechner combined two rooms into a seminar room. They also have a TV lounge. On the other hand, they do not have study rooms like McFadden. However, students in the McFadden/Lechner community have access to both dorms, so these things aren’t really an issue.
