Hey guys,
I am thinking of applying to Michigan, but I just have a few questions. For Freshman year at Michigan, typically how big are the lecture halls? Do you have the option to choose the same class with less people, instead of enrolling in a big lecture hall? Also, I know once you get more into your major the classes get smaller, but does anyone know how big the classes are if you major in Communications? Thanks.

Generally the class size depends on the class. Very rarely can you take the same class that is taught in a big lecture hall in a classroom environment, and usually those are reserved to special programs like honors. Each lecture also usually has a discussion though, and to my experience almost all big lectures do. Your discussion section is more of a classroom environment that resembles high school where you’re in a room with 15-30 people and you review what the professor went over in lecture. The sections are taught by a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) and all of your papers/exams will be graded by GSIs.

The COMM 101 and 102 classes are massive, but the higher level the class, and the more prereqs it has, the smaller the class size (generally).

Let us know if you have any other concerns.

Did you take communications at UMichigan? If so, is it a good program? Is it very hands-on where its not all discussion based but being able to (for example) film, etc. Also do you anything about SAC program (Screen, Arts & Culture)? Thank you!
