How do you take notes in lecture? I know there isn’t one set way to do things, but I need some ideas. I take notes out of the book on my own time, but my professor lectures from slides like normal. I can’t get into a good way to take in this information- so how do you do it? How do you take notes and study in general from a set up like this?
First, class notes should trigger your recollection of class content . Do not try to take a transcript of the presentation.
- Copy anything written on the board.
- Listen and put down high points much like the first sentence. In text introduces a topic.
- Indicate with+ or - signs information that is emphasized; for example, anorexia isn’t eating but eating too little
- Develop shorthand such as as a fo with or intro is introduction
- Group information by numbers or dots, but leave good space so you can add to notes; use page numbers
- List unfamiliar vocabulary in the top of the page so that you can write down word meaning
- If necessary add nfo in margins of the page and above the line of script
- List steps with names separately; list names of theorists and theories separately such as Freud/Psychoanalysis and make sure names and theories are spelled correctly
- Unite info with arrows. Highlight key area in color.
Taking notes is writing both physically in print or script and retaining information as you listen and write. If you have an incomplete idea, add information when you recall it or read it i text.
Notes are a tool…As long as you can read your writing you are good. Find your own script. For example, I am left handed, but you wouldn’t know it from my cursive. My notes are backhand script, written on the reverse side of the page. had the notebook on the left desktop next to me.I
Like anything, note taking takes time to learn and develop personal style
Also see if your college has a study skills center that might have instruction on how to take notes
See if the slides are available on line and print them out before the class. Take notes on the slides and add relevant material.
My children were taught the Cornell notes process in middle school and it was reinforced in high school. It seems to be a very effective and I second that suggestion.
