Lectures are torture

I have a problem everytime I go to class (hour long) I start getting very sleepy like I stayed up all nite. I proceed to nod off occasionally which is cutting in on me taking notes. Its like I cannot help it. I never feel like this any other time of day until I go to class, ITs like as soon as I reach class I get chronic sleep. I go to bed early enough to wake up and feel awoke. I dont know whats going on

Last semester I had a 75-min lecture right after lunch three times a week. I loved and enjoyed the class but sometimes I just couldn't stay awake. A method (worked for me) is to bring snacks to class. For me I brought chocolate, they definitely kept me from dozing off, of course they also helped me put on some extra weight that I didn't want...

I despise lectures too!!! PURE TORTURE! They are seriously horrendous for someone like me who needs to participate actively and be involved in discussion for anything to sink in.

Try bringing a water bottle or a diet Snapple or something and take a drink every time you feel yourself getting sleepy. That way you won't gain any weight. Another idea that sometimes works for me is to pretend you are a journalist at a press conference and that taking notes is part of your job. Or, pretend that you researched all the material yourself and are watching someone else present it. The second one sounds weird, but I swear, if you pretend everything being presented was your idea, you'll listen. Who doesn't listen to their own presentation? Another idea is to read everything you know will be covered in the lecture beforehand along with some articles. That way you can listen and form an opinion on what is being said, instead of just being passive.

^ Great ideas. Weird, but great.

Being prepared for a lecture always makes the lecture more interesting to me. If I know the background info I can be an active participant... either by asking questions or just but asking myself questions about the lecture and writing them down for later thought. I find that if I go to a lecture unprepared and have no idea about the topic I just get sleepy. If I can stay awake during a 2 hour chem lecture at 8am on Monday morning... anyone can stay awake! Bring water... snacks, mints, whatever.

How about just skip the lectures and read the books.

Honestly there is nothing in the lecture that you will not get in recitation Lab or in the Book.

id much rather sleep in my bed than in a sucky lecture hall, whoes seats hurt my back and neck.

Lots of professors throw stuff into tests that are specifically from lecture and can't be found in readings.

So that people who share your sentiments have to show up.

You're paying for the professors though, not just the books.

Seems like a huge waste of (probably your parents') money if you don't go to your classes.

collegek18

What time are your classes? You could be having issues with your blood sugar and not know it. Go to your Uni health services and get your blood sugar checked out.

Also, do you drink coffee? A little coffee will not kill you.

I used to have trouble staying awake at lectures as well. Know what I did? Began sitting alone amongst strangers and with my wallet exposed. Being insanely paranoid, I figure if I fell alseep someone would steal it. It's a strange method, but it works.

funny thing, I pay for school 100% by myself. No help from anybody but the Govt with my pell and tap + loans.

Im not paying for the class, your just paying for a ending grade.

College is a measure of what you can accomplish in a certain amount of time. If it were truly about learning it would take a lot longer than 4 years.

I disagree. I think you're paying for the quality of your classes.

Well if you're paying for the quality of the classes than the majority of us are being ripped off.

What else would you be paying for? Just the name?

You are paying for the grade. You pay tuition costs so you can have your grade show up next to a class on your transcript. That's all that it is. If this were denied, would you still be paying tuition? Would you simply be paying for the sake of learning? I wouldn't. I'd just go to class for free. But if you want acknowledgement, you need to hand over the $$$.

I figure I have to pay for my A's now. If I don't get the A in a class, I've wasted my money. I don't pay for some two-bit to have diareeah of the mouth but unfortunately I get that as a bonus.

As others have said, read your book and you'll be fine. Even if something is thrown in from lecture, read your book enough and you should be able to figure it out.

I like to blow time off by drawing in class.

No you are paying for some person, to give you a grade, this grade will the distinguish your performance. It has nothing to do with learning.

How many of you could teach the subjects you have so called learned to someone else?, I'm betting not alot of you.

If your a Junior, could you pass a class you took as a freshman again, would you remember it all. I highly doubt it.

I don't mean to be harsh, but out of the 475 or so seat lecture hall in my chem 101 lecture, which was full, the lecture hall was never 1/4 full, never.

But labs and recitations were always packed.

Whatever you say.

But I personally think you're paying for the experience.

LOLOLOL

then you're wasting your money. Why don't you just go to class for free? No one is checking if you paid or not. You'll still get the same experience, the same education.

I mean, you won't have a transcript to back that up, but hey, it's all about the experience right?

I would drop in to a class I was really interested in if I wasn't signed up for it and I could get away with it. I'm personally not paying for the grades. =]
