I am planning ot sign up for Physics 7A, but when I checked the fall schedule it had Lectures, Discussions, or Labs to choose from. I'm assuming I would sign up for a general Lecture, but do i also need to take the labs and discussions as well?

yes, 3 parts to the course.

what do we do for discussions in math? Do we "discuss" the mateiral in lecture? Who presides over these?

A GSI, or Graduate Student Instructor leads each section. Usually he reinforces and go over what was covered in lecture, give out quizzes, and the students are broken down in smaller groups to figure out problems.

that seems crazy. Does each of these have a number of units, or is it all like 4 units? I thought my schedule was gonna be fairly relaxed, they say only 14ish units. Now i'm gonna be really busy, especially if I'm also taking a math class, which also has those threee parts.

Now I'm worried.

Lecture - Led by Professor. Professor teaches theory and problem-solving, and occasionally does demonstrations.

Discussion - Led by TA. TA does worksheets containing conceptual questions and problems. These worksheets are the same every year, and in fact the answers are on the Phys 7A website right now. Worksheets are NOT collected and are for your benefit only.

Lab - Led by TA. You do six useless experiments that are on the easy side and don't help you that much (IMO), but nonetheless count as 5% of your grade. Labs are due at the end of each lab section.

All three components are REQUIRED and count as 4 units total.

so much for all that free time i keep hearing about.

for chem 1a, how are the labs? Are they similar?

"so much for all that free time i keep hearing about."

what free time have you heard about?
