Hello Cohort 11 scholar here.
Just as a hopefully good news to some. LEDA doesn’t really care about your test score. I applied with a 23 and still made it to the next round. The 2nd round is really about financial info and proof of residency. The reason that LEDA wants their scholars to be citizens is because it is harder to help them, because LEDA pays for a lot of things. I am really excited to see that there are some people excited about it, because the kids at my school weren’t really that hype. Also LEDA is sooooooo much better than questbridge in my opinion because it is more of a personal experience. Just my opinion though. I am going to lookthrough the form and address any unanswered questions I see. I don’t really use CC but I will for cohort 12
@gwayne22 I remember when I applied I was really on edge because they use to practiced rolling admission, so People were already accepted into the program before I even got my interview. But they are not doing that anymore. So I suggest that you just and be proud of yourself for just completing the application, because it s not an easy one.
Last post from me for now: My personal LEDA Experience
I am from Dallas, Texas and I was one of the 8 scholars from Texas ( more than any other state). All the other ones where Mexican and from the valley( south south Texas but one is from El paso and they are bomb af. One got into PENN, another MIT and another Princeton). I came into LEDA not knowing what I got myself into. Once I got off the plane I instantly meet @happyslappy and knew that it was gonna be interesting. We were already talking about our schools and the rigor of our classes and our scores. But that was not even the good part. When we actually arrived at Princeton I was surrounded by strangers and it was slightly scary. I thought it was finna be lame af. But it turned out to be chill. I was known as the sleeper because I could fall asleep at basically any moment. It was a pun throughout the 7 weeks and still now. There is no downtime at LEDA. There is always something scheduled soo all that summer AP homework…is a no go. But it is super fun even though you will be super busy. Every Saturday you take a SAT or ACT. Just like the real test. It helps to practice because Advantage testing is one of the best tutoring companies. The best part of the experience to me was Res life, because we really bonded together and became a family. A lot of us still keep in touch now. The RMs were amazing. My favorite one really opened my eyes to real world issues, coming from conservative Texas. I got to see and learn something that I wouuldn’t have if I would’ve stayed in Texas. You can ask any scholar if they would repeat their experience again and they would most likely say yes. It is life changing so I understand yall’s nervousness. IT wont be the end of the world though. There are other resources out there that do in some type of form what LEDA does. This is just a snipet of how I would describe the best of my LEDA experience, we had some funny, sad, and happy times. But if you have any questions. Post Them!
@smarttaytay Wow, interesting! One question though, with all the ACT and SAT practice, do you believe that it helped you with your score? I really want to increase my score! Also, what college did you end up applying for?
@nierouz I increased from a 23 to a 28. So it was a huge jump. The advantage testing tutoring is amazing. I am applying to Georgetown, Columbia, UPENN, Claremont Mckenna, Tulane, Emory, Boston College, URichmond, UT, Texas A&M, TCU and Pepperdine. My number on is Georgetown
Guys I’m so excited!! Honestly at this point, I think everyone deserves to get into LEDA and even if you don’t get in, maybe it’s because LEDA already sees you as a leader, so really I guess what I’m saying is you or I shouldn’t be nervous about hearing whether or not we got pass Round 1 because I think at heart, we’re all leaders and that’s what matters <3
@lycheeseeds I wish that the people at LEDA had that same philosophy hehe.
Btw what did you guys write your essays on? This might be too late but I wrote my diversity essay about how my family left Sudan during the civil war and how all the different cultures I saw in the U.S. lead to me researching more about cultures, which led to my passion for history
For the leadership one, I wrote about going to band camp, and how making my first real commitment lead to me finding something that I loved which inspired me to become a section leader.
@Ahmeda14960
For the diversity one I wrote about how life in Jamaica was and how I didn’t even think about education at all and how coming to America changed my life…
For the leadership one I wrote about how back in Jamaica kids would die really young and when the government built a community center in my community noneo would use the library there. The teachers would use it as a form of punishment and i went there as punishment and fell in love with reading and thats where I got my first leadership opportunity because I started to have more people read and have them join book clubs which helped keep them out of trouble…
For the diversity essay, I wrote about how my difficult childhood was in Jordan and how transitioning from there to America led me to become the person I am today. For the leadership essay, I wrote the importance of leadership and what it means to me. I hope I get to stand out lol. It was my first application-type essay, and I have hard time getting personal, and not to mention my terrible essay outline skills haha.
