LEDA Scholars 2013 Thread!!

:) good luck Collegebound966

Hellllloooo LEDA Cohort 9 Propsies!

Just like Smithie17 (My fellow Cohort 8 Scholar!) and KathianMarx I just had to create a CC account for this thread. I wasn’t aware of such a thread existing for the LEDA program, makes me sooo happy/excited/all that good stuff

Introductions are in order…I’m from the heart of the Navajo Nation of Arizona, and I am really wishing my username was something as cool as Smithie17, well really Brownie17 (don’t ask, unless you’re uber curious…)

Anywayyy after that creeper introduction…I wish all of you happy news! Whether it’s something as simple as getting to eat your favorite meal or something as big as…getting a new sibling, good news is good news…haha but if you want some advice or anything of the sort regarding packing and what not I would glad to be of some help ^^.

One last thing regarding the LEDA reunion (happens in late July I think…) hopefully I’ll be there to meet all you wonderful people! Now time for me to stop procrastinating and start on my graduation speech!

Best of luck to all of you, in all aspects of life! May the force be with you, the odds ever in your favor, and a bunch of other awesome quotes regarding good luck!

-CharlieBoy31

Thanks and congrats!

A question to all: when do you think it would be a good time to email Ms. Early or Ms. Gonzalez to inquire about acceptances? Will they definitely send a rejection letter?

@CollegeBound966. You should ask them now, don’t email them, they may never reply, call their office, or even cellphone

Thanks Artoria. I will call them today or on Monday, but I’m sort of apprehensive. Will they tell me right then and there if I’ve been selected? I’m scared…

I got my rejection letter guys… At least the anticipation is over. Congrats to all of you that got in though!

Rejection letter for round 2 or 3?
Thank you.

Does anyone still haven’t heard about anything yet?

Hi you guys!!! I’m new to this but I just couldn’t contain myself!!! I got accepted to Leda Scholars and I just can’t wait to get to meet you  You all sound A-MAZ-ING!!

Hello! Congrats to all those that have gotten in.
Have any of y’all receive a package yet? Like with more information or with a shirt or anything?
Thanks

Hello Scholars,
I’m glad that some of you wrote me. I’m so excited for you all! I know you all will have an amazing summer at Princeton. When things get tough, remember to enjoy it. If I could go back to last summer, I would in a heartbeat – I miss my Cohort so much.

I’m sorry for getting back to you all so late. I know you all leave next week, but I’m positive you are doing well for yourselves. I had some trouble logging back on to CC, so you can imagine my frustration levels peaked when I saw your unread messages.

A New Jersey summer is horrible. You will sweat, you will be hot, and it will be humid. But, it is so worth it. Here is a list of things I recommend packing. Pack as you see fit. These items are just second to what you’re told to on your packing list and what you normally pack for trips.

Backpack:
Pens, Pencils, Calculator (TI-83 or TI-84), Laptop (if you have one), Highlighters, Erasers, 3 Folders, Loose leaf in a binder, * a hole puncher (if possible – you can get them at Wal-Mart and they fit in your binder),* sticky notes, and *paper clips.
*If you’re not into punching your papers, labeling book pages, or keeping notes together, don’t bring these items. I’m an organized person, so I needed them to survive.
You will get your Aspects syllabus, books, and assignments upon arrival!!

Toiletries:
Bringing a shower tote will make your life so much easier!
Toothbrush/Toothpaste, Brush/Comb, Mouthwash, Soap, Shampoo, Body Wash, Loofa or Shower Gloves, Contact Solution, Contacts, Glasses, Floss, Retainer, Deodorant, Lotion, Facial Wash, Shavers/Shaving Cream, Flip-Flops

You will be provided with towels, but you should bring your own – it helps you feel more at home. Also, go to the travel section at your local Wal-Mart or Target and purchase two cans of bug spray. If they’re travel size, they will have no problems getting through TSA. The Cicadas, worms, spiders, and centipedes are horrible. You might want to check your windows before you open them – especially if you leave them open because of the heat. You might want to spray the screen if you’re scared of bugs like I am. Don’t spray the wood, because it could be harmful to the structure. Use your best judgment. Also, investigate your room for any damages and report them. Take out any spider webs, so you won’t have to worry about them. And change your trash bags when they get full. Don’t be gross.

Room Essentials:
You will be provided with sheets, a pillow w/ pillowcase and a blanket. I recommend bringing your own sheets and small blanket, so you will feel comfortable. If you’re okay with what you will be provided with, you will be fine. They just help to make you feel at home and relax after a long night of studying.

Bring shoes and flip-flops or sandals! Your feet will get hot and you will hate socks. Keep them off of the floor- put them in a drawer or on top of your bookshelf. Bugs will climb into them if you’re not careful.

You might want to bring a few photos of friends and family that you can prop up on your shelf, that is, if you get homesick easily. It’s important to use these photos as a means of motivation – they’re your reasoning for actively pursuing an education.
If you’re a hanger person, you can purchase some at the university store!

Clothing:
You will love shorts and t-shirts by the end of the summer. It’s important to feel comfortable in class. If you wear dresses, bring some and be comfortable! You will not have to wear a business suit daily! Be yourself, but be appropriate. As a LEDA scholar, I’m positive that you understand what is appropriate and inappropriate.
Bring dressy clothes. A suit and tie or a pantsuit. Just make sure that you look professional. You will visit colleges, so be prepared for walking. You don’t want to wear 5 inch heels. You will be acceptable wearing flats, but if you like heels more power to you.
Bring an umbrella or a raincoat. Princeton has the best humid rain, but when it rains it’s like a bucket being poured over you. Keep it in your backpack!!

You will have tons of fun this summer!! DO NOT LOSE YOUR KEYS!! KEEP THEM ON YOUR LANYARD. Also, if you leave your room, make sure your keys are with you. I had a single, so I didn’t have a roommate to save me if I got locked out. Prop a trashcan in between your door if you’re stepping out for a minute, but be aware that they squeeze under pressure and the door will shut. Just keep your keys visible and you won’t forget them. Make sure your lunch card is attached to your lanyard. If you don’t have it, you won’t eat. Food = good. Especially after learning so much. Don’t miss morning meetings because you overslept. It’s impossible to miss, actually, because you will be hunted down and dragged out of bed. Just kidding, but that’s essentially what happens. This is where important events are announced and you learn from others.

Always do your assignments and don’t fall behind. You aren’t being graded as you are in school, but you will not be able to participate in discussion if you don’t know what others are talking about. You will be called on and you will have to voice your opinion. What you give is what you get. As you create your college list, don’t be afraid to change your mind and step out of your comfort zone. As long as you research your school and prove that you did so, you will be fine. I went from wanting to attend a big University, to learning that I’m actually a small, liberal arts, women’s college kind of student.

I’m excited to hear about your summer and am especially excited to hear where you end up!
Feel free to contact me. Just make sure you put your email in the message and s p a c e out your address, so CC doesn’t automatically block out your address. They weren’t joking with confidentiality.

You will be great!

Best,
Smithie

P.S.
If there are any Women who are interested in attending a women’s college, contact me! I know some other scholars who are attending other sister schools, so I can put you in touch with other folks. I’m attending Smith this year! :)

Thank you, Smithie! :)

Thank you so much smithie!

You’re welcome! I typed that around 2 in the morning, so I apologize. In regards to spraying the window screens, I would ask if it’s acceptable to spray them. I wiped mine, whenever bugs came about, with a damp paper towel, because I didn’t have bug spray. Use your bug spray for the large population of mosquitoes outdoors. But if you feel that bugs are infiltrating your lair, ask.
I was a very anal person while at LEDA, so the bugs scared me- I’m not exaggerating, they’re horrible.
Anyway, the academic portion of the program is far more important. You will debating some of the most controversial issues. Remember to be open-minded. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and versatile. I went in as a very left-wing feminist. When I left LEDA, I remained liberal, but I was cleansed of my ignorance.
This is your time to grow. You have an entire family of Scholars beside you.

See you all in July,

Smithie

So I can’t apply anymore? I barely found out about this program and was really excited about it :(
