left-handed desks

most classrooms in my college have the "right handed" desks and recently I was taking an exam using one of them (i'm a lefty) so I had to turn in my seat to get comfortable and the TA thought I was looking at someone's paper! no big deal, but this has happened a few times in the last couple of years.

I was wondering if any lefty students feel like there aren't enough desks for us? Rarely do I see even 1 lefty desk in a classroom, which makes writing annoying - you stretch out your room to write and there's no desk underneath. I wish classrooms had long tables with chairs instead of little black plastic wedges you pull out from the side.

the 1 thing I love about being a lefty is I can use the computer mouse and write with my other hand at the same time.

A lot of the classrooms at my school have every 3rd desk a lefty. It doesn’t really bother me which one I have to use.

At my school, usually all the desks on the far left column of a section are lefty desks. Doesn’t affect me, though, since I’ll write with whichever hand the desk I’m sitting in is meant for.

I have many of my classes in a room that does not have a single left-handed chair in it. I’ve actually gotten to the point now where I prefer using a right-handed desk even though I write with my left hand. I guess I’ve just adjusted to it.

I do feel like it looks like I’m looking at someone’s paper when I use a right-handed desk… it’s a little annoying having to get to a class early on a test day so I know I can get a good desk.

Random left-hander story:
I was in a training session about the reasons freshmen drop out of college, and the speaker started talking about things that might make a student feel especially unwelcome at a campus if they identify with certain groups. She asked all the left-handed people to raise their hands. I proudly raised mine. She then said, “Look around. This is roughly the proportion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc. students at UCSB.” The thing was, I didn’t even think the proportion was right.

I hate desks that are one hand or the other and hope that with how common laptops are becoming schools will stop using them.

I have to switch hands so I can’t even claim to be left handed, because sometimes I am caught using my right. Blah.

haha in my college, like half the guys are gay, but the lefty desks are lacking. but I think lefties are like 10% of the population and gays make up even less, maybe 5-7%? a lot of young gay students are still in the closet though.

and everyone uses laptops now, so that makes more sense to have regular desks. except in math/science classes, people still usually use notebooks and pens.

I’m used to using the righty desks too, hops_scout…kind of like how we’ve adjusted to the mouse always being on the right side, same with scissors, tools, etc. I know a neurosurgeon resident who complains that it’s really hard to find surgical equipment for lefties! kind of sucks, because brain surgery is one of those things you don’t want to screw up…

I have a single model of scissors that I am able to consistently use. Most scissors that we have in the athletic training rooms don’t work for me. Sometimes I really struggle to cut tape when I am trying to use a pair that don’t work very well… For that reason, I have bought myself multiple pairs of the same ones…

You should sue the school for discrimination

make it a big lawsuit

go all the way to the Supreme Court

I suggest also suing the TA for bigotry

I’m a lefty and I hate the left-handed desks. unless I feel like writing in cursive (that’s the only time I ever tilt myself to write).

at my school there are some auditoriums that have 1/3 of the seats lefty…all on the right side of the audi., pretty annoying…i dont think 1/3 of people are left handed (they are too hard to use for right handed people since they are small and slide up from the side)
