Who else here is a legacy at GU? How much do you think it will help for EA (or if deferred RD)

I have a sister who went there. I guess they count it as a legacy, even though she just graduated last year.

I honestly don't think legacies count that much, unless, of course, your parents give loads of money to the school. It's a superficial basis for admission, and a smart admissions officer knows that.

I've heard it doesn't matter unless the parents are very influential, famous or huge donors.

I wonder how my chances would be affected if I told them my family has donated thousands of dollars to a rival school to get courtside sides at every one of a famous rival's basketball home games...

XD

My bro and sis went there. I've heard that legacy is actually kinda big at georgetown because they feel more guaranteed that you're going to make a positive impact... and because they know your parents will pay up the fees without a problem lol. Obviously it won't get u in but hey its a nice plus

EDIT I meant courtside seats, not courtside sides...

my two brothers, one sister, father, two uncles, aunt, and two grandfathers all graduated from gtown,
but i'm still sort of worried about it since my gpa is slightly low and my sat scores are 2040/2400, so the bottom of the range.
the good thing is my dad's an interviewer so i interview with the director of admissions for my region.
also,
they have a roughly 60 percent acceptance rate (or so i heard around a year ago) for legacies.

60%?? Thats incredibly high....I hope your right though. I interviewed with the regional chairperson of my district for GTown. Do you think that had anything to do with me being a Legacy?

yea i'd say so

60%? now that I think about it, it makes sense. If your parents are from GTown, you're probably above normal intelligence, you have access to tutors/privileges others might not and you have a positive example in front of you to succeed.

I don't know about the whole legacy issue, my dad is also an interviewer, but I just ended up interviewing with a normal alum interviewer. After I got deferred EA, Mr. Deacon sent a letter to my dad letting him know that legacy counts much more in RD than it does in EA....Anyone else get a similar letter or had a similar experience?

that 60 percent statistic is probably way off; i heard it in passing a couple of years ago, but i imagine it must be somewhere above 50 for legacies at any school even? right?

i asked around and discovered that 5 years ago, when the admit rate was somewhere between 20 and 25 percent, the admit rate for legacies was 42 percent. So roughly two out of five are admitted.

the admit rate for legacies last year was like 28% compared to only a few points lower for non-legacies. And some of that might be accounted for if some legacies were able to write killer why-georgetown essays due to their family history with the school

the same thing happened to me! i was deferred EA and i got a letter from Charlie Deacon that was like blah blah "we have taken into consideration your family's connections" and history and ties with the university or something simlar. 3 days till we find out. keeping my fingers crossed.

cer, just wondering where you got 28 percent from

alright im freaking out. i just got rejected from BC… oh great.

some times you have alumni affiliation or are a legacy and had big donors write you recs and they don’t want you they will waitlist you with intention of never actually accepting you as a gesture to not offend the donors that wrote your recommendations

legacies lets here what happened

waitlisted… my father went to georgetown. i am crushed.
