If my sister is the graduate of a school and i a legacy? Am I less of a legacy then someone hows parents went there? I'm not clear on how that label works.

And What exactly counts as a hook.
I've got several conflicting definitions of it.
Basically things like being black/a female in the sciences/ varsity athlete material

but these traits seem fairly ubiquitous there are THOUSANDS of them how can they be hooks?

If someone could explain these I would be very greatful.

I think at most places having an alum as any part of your immediate family makes you a legacy. Some places will consider more distant relatives as a “lesser” legacy. Some places call you a legacy if you great aunt on your cousin’s side checked out a book from the library. It just varies place to place.

A hook in my view - though I’m not in admissions - is anything that has the potential to grab the college’s attention. Someone has a hook if they are a type of student who is difficult to acquire and helps the college create the overall class they’re shooting for.
