Legacy applying to NU in RD---hurts, helps, or neutral?

This is from a friend of mine:
My mom attended grad school at NU journalism school. Northwestern is one of the places I’m applying to for college, and while I’d love to go, it’s not one of my tippy top choices, and I somewhat doubt I’ll ED. I’m a very strong candidate statistically and I like to think my essays and recs will be good. I get that having a legacy and passing over ED shows colleges that they’re not your first choice. With that said, does applying RD as a legacy 1) actually hurt your chances because it shows your lack of dedication 2) help your chances bc legacy is still a little hook or 3) do neither because these two effects end up neutralizing each other? What are your thoughts?

It definitely does not hurt you. It would be ridiculous for a college to think you are less “dedicated” than any other RD applicant. However, from what I’ve heard, there will really be no boost if you go RD. But why are you asking? If it would hurt you, would that change your decision to apply RD or to apply at all?

I doubt being a grad school legacy would even give you a boost in undergrad admissions, frankly.

Who even are you @PurpleTitan

@perspectivestude: A person and an alum. Why do you ask?

Who are you?
