both of my parents went to harvard, but they don't donate thousands of dollars. they do donate money regularly, just not exorbant amounts of it. will legacy help me in the admissions process and how will it help exactly if it does?

You will not be a development case, in which case you will be accepted barring any major academic or legal violation, but the fact that you are a legacy will certainly be a "tip factor." This means if you and someone else is considered to be the same in the admissions committee's eyes, you would get the spot.

They're also more likely to read your application thoroughly, which might help.
