Legacy at Harvard

To what extent does legacy matter when applying to Harvard. I realize that it can possibly be considered a "hook," but if your parent is relatively inactive as a Harvard alum does it make much of a difference?

Thanks!

I hate to bump, but I would appreciate one response :)

It’s worth a “second look” but usually not much more than that. Unqualified applicants won’t get into Harvard by virtue of their legacy status, unless their parents donated buildings or something. Between two equally qualified applicants, a legacy will probably win out.

I wouldn’t even call it a “hook,” because a “hook” implies that you can send off your application with a degree of confidence that you’re getting in. I don’t think that’s the case with the average legacy applicant.

Is legacy only for parents or would a (very inactive in the Harvard community!) uncle count??

As per Northstarmom:
