Legacy Effect on Duke Application

Statistically, how much does legacy have an effect on a Duke application. Does anyone have stats from any recent year of how many legacies applied and how many got in. Also if there are stats comparing ED legacy applications to RD. Also does anyone know if it helps more if a parent went to undergrad and a Duke graduate school. Thanks!

If you search this forum there have been a lot of discussions on legacy. Here’s one that has some stats that are a bit dated, but the message is the same:

In general, legacies will typically have about a 2X acceptance rate vs non-legacies at Duke. However, you should know that Duke really wants legacies to apply ED. Duke Admissions sees it as a flag that Duke is not your first choice if you are a legacy and apply RD.

Here’s more, with a quote from the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, Christoph Guttentag:

“My impression is that the admissions rate for children of alumni, as a rule of thumb, is roughly double the overall admit rate”

Also, to answer your other questions about who Duke considers a legacy:

“A legacy student is an applicant who has grandparents, parents, or siblings who have attended or are attending Duke. Duke does take legacy status into consideration when evaluating applications, but it will not make or break any individual application.”
