Does non-MT legacy at a top MT school such as CCM, Carnegie Mellon, or Michigan hold any weight at all? I’m guessing no, that it is mostly audition, but am wondering as both parents have legacy at one of those three schools. Does it give even a small edge up for an applicant like it does for students applying to more academic programs at selective schools?
Thanks!
I don’t believe that being a non MT legacy would have any effect - because so much of the decision is the audtion
They asked about it. But I don’t think it has any effect. Still it doesn’t hurt to add it to the package. You just never know. I know it can be helpful to attend a summer program. But I know that no program is a guarantee.
For my institution “legacy” has no affect, even if the parents are former MTs. There are just too many people auditioning at a high talent level and it would be completely unfair to give someone preference based off of their parents’ accomplishments.

It would help at Northwestern.
Well… being a legacy could help get your child admitted academically. For many schools, if you’re academically ineligible, you’re automatically not considered for the MT program. That happened to my son at several schools…one of them being the school my hubby and I graduated from.
@Jkellynh17 - you are correct about Northwestern, but the OP specifically asked about CCM CMU and Michigan, and I don’t think it would help there
Thanks everyone. I didn’t think so but was hoping it might make a tiny bit of difference with all else being equal!
