If high school kids seeking college admission this year experienced a "perfect storm," it appears transfer applicants experienced what I can only describe as a "perfecter storm."

With admission rates (and barometric pressure) at an all time low, do you think legacy matters more or less?

does it matter? you have no control over it.

Well, you can choose to apply to schools that you have a legacy at. That's not exactly a good reason to choose a college, though.

No, I guess it doesn't "matter," but I'm still curious.

It depends on the school. I know legacy matters at Georgetown.

I have ancestors affiliated with Harvard in every consecutive generation since its founding; however, it stopped sometime around the late 1800s. I'm also a descendent of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I'm not sure if they really care, and it isn't the reason that I applied.

thanks for sharing...

Well, I was just pointing out that despite the fact that it would be considered a pretty sweet legacy -- I was rejected last year, and probably will be this year. So, perhaps they don't matter as much for transfer?

Who's Ralph Waldo Emerson? Reminds me of Where's Waldo. I haven't played that since like 4th grade.

He was the leading author/philosopher of America's transcendalist movement in the mid 19th century. A graduate of the College and the Divinity school, he played a prominent role in the University throughout his life. He's still a very big figure there.

I am the reincarnate of Thomas Jefferson and consequently Winston Churchill..wonder if I should list this on my app...

if you actually read articles legacy is going down and down.

I mean, its probably the same if not higher at harvard, georgetown, UPENN (pretty big there, have a link off the site)..

for state schools, its going down, never meant much...

hope this helps

I think legacy becomes a big issue only when donations are involved. Co-enrollment is important though. I know Columbia likes to let siblings into the school because it maximizes their chances of donations in the future (I don't have legacy there, I am the oldest child in my family)
