My mom (and I am assuming grandfather) recieved a legacy letter to let them know I applied. Am I right in thinking this is NOT a likely letter and is sent out to all alumni who have a relative applying?

i believe your statement is correct.

Yea I’m sure they probably just send it to all alumni with children applying to UNC. But, I’m sure you were excited as I was when I read this:

“Last year, for example, we admitted 39 percent of our out-of-state alumni applicants, compared to only 20 percent of other out-of-state applicants.”

I bet that was good to hear, though I am in-state so I suppose it doesn’t do much for me being a double legacy.

Do donations increase the chance of getting in? lol It would be neat if my Grandfather’s regular large donations change anthing…

Yeah, unfortunately, I don’t think legacy helps much for in-state students since their are so many in-state students who have legacy.

But, I have a close family friend who also gives large donations and he was able to call the Director of Major Gifts at UNC who “flagged” my application in the admissions department. I don’t know how much it will help but it’s worth a try. You should talk to your grandfather about it.

^There aren’t THAT many in-state students with legacy. They just don’t consider it because all in-state students are supposed to be given an equal chance under NC state law.

If you’re in-state, the fact that you know someone who donates a lot should not help you in theory.

Well, I’m out of state.

raggydilo, publicly boasting about having played the “development card” is not going to win you many friends here, or anywhere. Keep that stuff to yourself. It’s just better for everyone.

Actually, raggydilo, I was wrong. You didn’t really boast, you simply announced. So forgive me for the inaccurate characterization. Still, that “development angle” doesn’t sit well with people and so I would encourage you to keep it to yourself.

Either way raggydilo, they really aren’t supposed to be considering that. I’m not sure how they treat it when you’re OOS, since I’m in-state, but if you’re in-state, it is not supposed to play in any role in your admissions decision.

sorry guys. just trying to help…

Hey guys, I got a seasons greetings e-mail from UNC.

Could that be considered a likely seasons greeting e-mail?

No, sorry, everyone gets those (or so I read in a previous post) :(
