Legacy question

My mother went to Barnard. Would I be considered a legacy for Columbia? I mean, on the Barnard website it says that:

"Barnard is located just across Broadway from Columbia's main campus and is one of four undergraduate schools within the Columbia University system (the others are Columbia College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies)."

In short No.

But actually you might get some benefit.

We are always pleased to receive applications from students whose family members have graduated from Columbia. When an applicant is extremely competitive and compares favorably with other similarly talented candidates, being the daughter or son of a Columbia University graduate b** may be a slight advantage in the admission process. This advantage may especially apply for “legacy” candidates.

Please note: applicants are considered to be “legacies” of Columbia only if they are the children of Columbia College or the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science graduates.

I'm just a little concerned because Columbia itself only seems to acknowledge Columbia College, Fu SEAS, and the GS as its 3 undergraduate colleges whereas Barnard claims that there are 4 undergraduate colleges and that it is one of them.

I've been looking around online and I've asked my mom, but I haven't found a clear answer.

Bumppppppp

"I'm just a little concerned because Columbia itself only seems to acknowledge Columbia College, Fu SEAS, and the GS as its 3 undergraduate colleges whereas Barnard claims that there are 4 undergraduate colleges and that it is one of them."

So Columbia went co-ed and separated from barnard in 1983, if you're mom attended barnard before that then yes, you would be considered legacy.

Pre-1983 BC alumnae are grandfathered in as CU alums, but do you know if they participate in the CU reunions or does BC have their own reunion thing for their older alums? Never thought of it and am curious...

Ok Here we go again
We seem to have this discussion every year with no definitive answer-I think there is a bit of urban legend here.
I am a pre 1983 CC alum and I have never been told or seen anywhere in writing that children of pre 1983 Barnard graduates are given legacy status for CC/SEAS admissions. It actually does not make much sense. Prior to 1983, just as today, Barnard had a separate admissions office, separate housing, separate alumni associations etc. Today Barnard graduates prior to 1983 would probably contribute their hard earned alumni dollars to Barnard not Columbia. Alumni events are usually held for CC graduates (think Hamilton/John Jay Dinners), and although there are occasional events that are joint (think Columbia 250 celebrations a few years ago), many alumni events are CC or SEAS specific. Although there are many purposes of preferential legacy admissions, certainly one of them is to enhance alumni donations and therefore giving these students legacy status is somewhat questionable in my mind. Next time I see an admissions officer I will ask the definitive question but if anyone has some inside info on this point I would love to know. Anyone seen any statement in writing on this point??

Well, my mom is a pre-1983 Barnard alumna. I would really appreciate it if somebody could find a definitive answer. Thanks

One of my points here is whether children of Barnard (pre 1983 graduates) are given FULL legacy status such as those of CC or SEAS graduates or whether it is the more nebulous affiliate status given to students whose parents attended the law school, business school, medical school, Teachers college, GS, etc. The CC/SEAS admissions office web site seems to be relatively clear on this issue so I would love to hear some specifics. A few years ago someone posted that they were told at an info session that Barnard children would be given legacy status but it was unclear to me which one of the preference the adcom was referring to.

I have also interviewed many legacy candidates who clearly have "legacy" on their applicant info - all were from CC or SEAS. None of them have been children of Barnard graduates. I have also interviewed children of pre 1983 Barnard graduates who have not had "legacy" on their applicant info.

there's your answer. I was wrong, sorry.
