My great grandfather attended princeton. Is this too far back? what is Princeton's idea of legacy?

Generally legacy status refers to applicants whose parents attended Princeton. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to mention your family ties, but I wouldn’t expect a serious boost from a great-grandfather.

ok thanks. do you happen to know where i would mention my great grandfather?

You may need to get creative and mention it in a short answer or one of the Princeton supplemental essays. There is no obvious place to do this – on the Common App, it asks for where your parents and your siblings have attended college … but no place for other relatives. You could also consider sending a cover letter to Princeton after your application is submitted mentioning your great-grandfather and your family’s history with Princeton and how you hope to continue the tradition.
