Parent went to Princeton (primary legacy). Is this enough to get into Princeton? Extracurriculars are good, but not national. Thoughts? Should I apply Single Choice Early Action?

If Princeton is your dead-on first choice, go for it.

But be certain to have your back-up applications ready in case the answer is no.

Talk with your family about how they expect you to pay for college. Princeton has excellent need-based aid, but if that won’t be enough (or if you don’t get in) there are lots of places that would offer you serious merit-based money.

I agree, apply SCEA, but I would like to comment that the 2250 SAT and top 1% class rank is enough to get into Princeton (and by that I mean be competitive). Legacy will help though. Do your parents donate money to Princeton?

Not enough to matter. Does anyone know if legacy’s advantage is magnified by applying SCEA? And the 2250 was taken in one sitting. Does that matter? (crossing fingers)

2250 in one sitting is better than a 2250 in two. Only marginally better, though.

This is such an important point, Cortana. For everyone, not just for the OP. “Good enough to get into Princeton” does not mean “good enough to be assured of getting into Princeton.” Honestly, I’m not sure the latter exists any more.

Probably only for recruited athletes and mega-development cases. It seems that legacy and URM hooks don’t have quite the same pull.

Oh, right, I did forget about athletes and du Ponts. As you inferred, Sherpa, I was talking about regular people.

Floraandfauna- it might. That depends on the school like UPenn for example only takes legacy into consideration for ED applicants. I would say for Princeton it isn’t though. And note that Princeton typically admits about 35% or more of legacy applicants.

Your statistics mean that you are a well-qualified candidate for Princeton or any other school in the US. Being a legacy is certainly a plus.

No one can say anything more than that other than – GO FOR IT!!
