Legacy?

Hey y'all! Just a quick question.

My dad attended University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign. When legacy students apply here, does it boost their chance of admission? We're from out of state if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Sorry to say but I don’t think it will help at all. Why I say this is because I was at my School’s College night last year where they had the admissions directors from three schools: U of I, ND, and SLU and they all hosted an open question panel. One of the questions was how much of an impact does legacy have at each of your schools. ND and SLU said it will help. Then the U of I guy just laughed and basically said they don’t even look at it.

It might help you get into your Dad’s Fraternity, but that’s about it…

I disagree…I think it does help. There is a spot on the application that asks for relatives that have gone to Illinois. I think it helps with their yield rate-especially for out of state applicants. If a student is out of state and is a legacy they are more likely to enroll than someone who is not a legacy…wouldn’t you say?

I could imagine parents telling their kids to apply just because its their alma mater, even if the kids don’t really want to go there, so it might not necessarily be good for yield.
