Does legacy count for anything at Northeastern? Son has a sibling at Northeastern as well as several family members who have attended going back a good 50 years. In addition, an aunt of his did teach there in the early 80's.

I would think son would get in on his own- applying to college of science (bio)with a 3.622/4.0 mixture of honors/ap/college prep and 1950 SAT's (620 W 630 CR 700 M) - lots of sports and volunteer hours, but the competition is fierce so not sure. There are other kids from his high school applying that have higher SAT's and GPA (2200/3.9ish). To me he seems to be an exact match - for these other kids it seems like more of a safety to them - What does everyone think?

Admissions have only been getting more competitive over the last few years. Your son is within the middle fiftieth of admitted students in terms of SAT score, but he’s probably somewhere between the 25th and 50th percentiles. I don’t know if Northeastern take legacy into account, sorry. It certainly looks like he could get in, but it’s nowhere near a safety.

Actually that chart uses GPA on a 5.0 scale (ours is 4.0 although students can go a little above 4.0 with AP classes). According to our naviance - this is an exact match for son.

Don’t underestimate the kids using it as a safety net. I was one of those kids, but when I didn’t get into my reach schools (I didn’t really have any matches) I choose between Northeastern and two other schools- and Northeastern easily won out. The people with 3.9/2200 probably don’t have Northeastern as their top choice, but they’ll still consider it if things don’t go right elsewhere.

Definitely don’t underestimate… my D is a first year student… and is one of those with a very high GPA and very high SAT scores and it was a top choice for her!!!

Not underestimating - just know the kids I’m talking about know where else they are applying - one of them doesn’t even like city schools!!!
