How much does having a father who graduated from UPenn and still donates make a difference on admissions?

Being a legacy is a slight boost in admissions during the ED round. Unless your parent has donated a large amount (7ish figures) that probably won’t help you.

I would make sure that you get all the info on Penn you can from your dad though, sometimes it feels like legacies are expected to know more about the school and have a better answer to Why Penn in their application than other students.

Will help, definitely.

Your father should have been taking you to alumni association meetings for legacies. My son and I went to one in the fall, and he is a freshman in HS. One guy there had a child in kindergarten, and was asking questions (no, I’m not kidding…). They answer those type questions there, what your chances are based on being a legacy.

Helps a lot in ED, maybe not at all in RD.

Thought is that if you are a legacy and want to go to Penn above other schools, you’ll apply ED. Applying RD means you don’t really want to go to Penn, and would pick Yale or Harvard over it, for example…
