Am I considered a legacy if my dad graduated from Northwestern's med school, but I am applying for undergrad ED? Thanks!

Depends. Ask Northwestern. But the impact of being a legacy is typically strongly correlated with how much money your connections have donated.

The way to check is to look at NU supplement. It will ask who in your family has attended NU UG or G school. Some schools will only include parents for UG, some will include grandparents. I would say it is more of an exception to be considered a legacy for anything other than UG.

It’s actually not the case at most schools that legacy admission is tied to giving history. There is a category of admits that is a Developmental candidate and that is where the size of the gift is the factor.

^^^I actually disagree with that. Legacy is a hook with many schools even if you do not give large amount of money. How big of a hook is different for each school.

I think we are saying the same thing, oldfort. Legacy is separate from Developmental and not tied to how much the relative gives…

Most of the time, but not always, legacy is considered at schools like NW only if a parent graduated from the mainstream undergraduate program of the school. You have to check specifically with NW what their criteria happens to be, grandparents don’t usually cut it for legacy purposes, nor do medical schools, MBA programs, nontraditional programs, non UG degrees.

Sorry. I didn’t read your post correctly. That’s what happens when I try to multi-task.:)
