How helpful is it that both parents went to UNC, as well as an aunt and uncle for an OSS student?
Having parents who attended for undergrad is helpful. It was one of the relatives listed on the common app when my D applied. I am not sure about the others. Our OOS high school… which is located in an over represented area of the country … Had 4 acceptances since 2012. We had a family member who had recently graduated … I often wonder if that helped my D but we will never know.
I’m an alum, and I live in state. My child is applying this year. I recently received a letter from UNC Admissions that said in state legacy applicants get in at a rate of 55% to 45% for non legacy in state applicants.
I think OOS alums with children who are applying received a similar letter but with lower percentages. It does give you a boost.
The official policy of UNC-CH regarding legacy admissions is found in the UNC-CH Admissions Policy, here, http://www.admissions.unc.edu/files/2013/09/Admissions__Policy.pdf, on Page 1 under Part III: “In the application of this policy of competitive admissions to nonresident students, preference for admission may be given to nonresident applicants who are children of alumni of the institution.”
I have seen posters in other threads in the UNC forum give a 40% acceptance rate for OOS legacy applicants. I don’t have an independent source for those exact numbers, although this link from another poster gives some graphics that may be relevant: https://alumni.unc.edu/news-publications/other-publications/special-reports/admissions-article-archive-admissions-to-unc/charts/.
