How much does being a legacy help you in the admission process?

it helps mainly if u apply ED.. how much? no one knows for sure

I'd like to understand this better too. I know it varies from school to school, sometimes only helps if parent is a major donor or student is applying ED.

I was shocked and disappointed when the development officer at my H's alma mater (that is constantly trying to get him to be an even larger donor) said, "not much" when asked whether a legacy would be an advantage to our son. And my H is in their view book!

I'm not sure whether to believe it or not, but I'm making sure S knows it's not a sure bet (even though he's a very good candidate for this school) and that he needs safeties.

But are you asking about a specific school?

For a school like NU that has such a strong alumni system, legacy is something they'll take note of, but I really don't know how much it'll help. I don't even know if it could give you that little extra push, say if it comes down between you and someone with near identical stats. With that said, both my parents went to NU for grad school, and I got in ED. So, I don't know.

legacy, they say, matters if it comes down to two candidates with equal stats. with that being said, i think it matters slightly more than that, also recs are important, if you can get recs from insiders it will help you greatly.

Maybe I'm being cranky, but I don't see how schools can ask for all kinds of loyalty and donations when they don't return the loyalty. Like, do they expect an alum will keep giving them money after they've rejected his child? That's not so smart.

An alumni donation is not a bribe to accept a future student.

Money makes the world go round, unfortunately.

Would it be more important as a senior trying to get into NU undergrad to have a dad that went there for undergrad or a dad that went to Kellogg for grad? (hes also on the board of alumnis)

i don't know, you have legacy, don't worry about it, focus on YOUR application instead. I was accepted to NU as a transfer, both of my parents went to kellogg

I was ALMOST a NU legacy.

My grandfather was going to NU after he got back from WWII, but his car broke down in Minneapolis, so he went to school there instead. And that's a true story.

haha (10 char)
