How important is legacy to schools, and can it help you get into a reach?

It depends on the school. Do a search on CC for each school you’re interested in.

what kind of connection to a university do you have to have to be considered a legacy? graduate school or undergraduate school? parents are faculty? donate tons of money?
some people claim to be a “legacy” when their parents really only took a few classes there… i feel like affiliation to the school counts more

Each school determines what they consider to be legacy. Generally a family member (how close or far is up to the school) should have attended there (and probably graduated). You’ll have to look at each school you are interested in to find out details.

It definitely depends on the school. I believe Ivies tend to weigh legacy at least somewhat. However, MIT does not give ANY consideration for legacies (except maybe a quick second check to make sure they didn’t reject you by accident). Same with UCs.
