legal downloads

Why do we get the crappy deals for legal downloads? It looks like a few other popular universities in the state signed up for ruckus. The service is free for all current students. Hmmph.

Well.. I guess it doesn't really concern everybody. But.. heh. Just because other colleges have freebies, we should too!

what will happen to me if i use a filesharing program while living in a dorm??

Yes do they monitor your internet usage (i.e they track bandwith usage, they track the websites you've been to, they block sites, or they don't give a crap)?

If you use a file-sharing program for music/movies in the dorms you might get called on it... Five UCLA students had to pay $3,000-$4,000 to settle private lawsuits with the RIAA last year. I think they were using DC++ in the residential halls.

how will they know?

Are you referring to the UCLA ResNet administrators or the RIAA zootsuits?

what if you use mirc? or bittorent?

You might want to ask Icarus... he works (worked?) for the STC.

Most students just bring the files they have and create student only networks at the campus (usually more than enough).

And the music isnt necessarily "downloaded" as shared over the network with an larger than life HD.

UCLA doesnt monitor your activity, but if RIAA supects something and supoenas the school, they won't hesitate to give up your info.

what's STC?

Student Technology Center.

So they don't monitor your internet activity? You won't get called up for downloading hefty movies at late night (not that I do!)?

No but keep in mind that internet at those places is pretty communistic if you know what I mean. Theres only so much bandwidth to go around.

PS Get a GOOD virus protection before you go. Ive heard plenty of horror stories from virues that wreak havoc on campus networks.

you have to have XP SP2 (if you have windows) and an antivirus before they let you use the network.

what kind of deals do ucla students get?

deals for what?

legal downloads

Do you get software deals on campus? I plan on getting Vista at a cheap price (hopefully). Also same goes for hardware (I'm do a lot of comp. upgrading myself)

i wouldnt call any of these "deals".
