Legal guardian/complicated financial aid question

I have a question about whose information I need to fill out colleges' specific financial aid forms and whose documents I should send in because I have a legal guardian. It's kind of complicated: I've been living with my friend's mom, my legal guardian, for a year, my dad lives on the other side of the country and pays child support for me to live on, and I have no contact with my mom. I've filled out a general noncustodial waiver for my mom because I don't have contact with her, but it doesn't seem to make sense that I should send my dad's information when I've never lived with him and he pays a specified amount of child support.

How should I go about filling out financial aid forms? My dad is a noncustodial parent and his income doesn't reach my household, but my legal guardian is only financially responsible for me to the extent of the child support my dad. I hope this makes some sense, and thanks for the help in advance!

Have your legal guardian fill out the form, as well as your Dad. As for your Mom's info, you'll have to call the specific schools and ask.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck.

How much child support is paid, when does it cease, and does it go through a state agency or is it simply a check payable to the guardian(s)?

220/month, it ends when i turn 21 or when I move out (when it would instead be sent directly to me), and its just a check to my guardian, not through the state
hope this helps and thx, november 1st is wayy too soon

Your father's & your mother's income will be used to assess your need for financial aid. Even though you don't live with either one of them, colleges look first to them to pay for your education. While it is not a legal responsibility, the colleges consider it to be a moral and social one.

So you will need both of them to file the forms.

Your legal guardian is just that, your guardian who does not have a financial obligation to pay for your education and is not the one who should be submitting their financial information.
