Legally changing name -- Financial Process

So if one were to change his/her legal name ... What exactly would you do in order to make sure that everything in terms of financial aid is ok? Because I know for things such as the MPN [Master's Promissory Note] you sign with your name [in this case my old name] ... I just want to make sure that once this change happens nothing horrible happens like losing my aid because the names didn't match up

Also, just to provide more information, I just changed the spelling of my first name and added my confirmation name as my middle name.

Thanks

Did you do a formal change of name through a court process already? If you did I’d take whatever documentation you have verifying that and go to your school’s FA aid office and get their help with whatever issues that may raise.

If you haven’t formally changed it through a court process, if I was you I’d just use whatever name/spelling you want informally, but for the purposes of your aid and other legal and financial matters, keep your legal name the same for now.

If you’ve legally changed your name, your first step is to get your social security card changed. You need that changed so that your name matches on for the IRS (and FAFSA if you’re still in school). Then, contact everyone you need to contact: school, your bank, credit cards, etc, and tell them you have changed your name. They will tell you what paperwork they need and where to send it.

^^if a formal name change…to add to the list tbd your personal situation: driver’s license, passport, voter registration, employer,

Your name for financial aid must match your name as it appears on your social security card. If you legally change your name & update your name with the social security administration, you can give a copy of your social security card to your financial aid office so that they can make updates on their end.
