Lehigh Class of 2017!

Lehigh2017,
My oldest went for Mechanical Engineering and didn’t want to leave Lehigh so he stayed another 2 years for his Master’s degree. My middle did computer engineering and my last is looking at Design Arts or something. Usually siblings want to have there own schools but there is something strange about Lehigh that changes all that. It is so unbelievable how many siblings attend Lehigh, especially twins and even a triplet set I know of. I don’t know if the 50%+ that pay Lehigh’s asking price necessarily puts them in the top 5% but most families I’ve met who couldn’t get a dime had to take out loans and Home Equity Loans.

I have read all of the facts and figures…I am just wondering what the real financial aid given is based on “EFC” #'s. My son is a legacy - father and uncle both have undergrad and master’s from Lehigh. My son REALLY wants to attend…he loves the school. So what you say about “something about the school” is true. After I went for an official tour (have been on campus 100’s of times but never had an official tour until this fall) I could not imagine why anyone would want to attend any other school. The professors are amazing, the students are amazing, lots of school spirit…lots of music opportunities and other opportunities. Does anyone know if the ED decisions will be around the 15th or has that been pushed back because of the hurricane and the change in ED deadline?

Thanks for the info! And I agree, it is VERY insightful to see how many people are legacies and how many siblings go to Lehigh. Being a first generation college student, it excites me quite a bit to be able to start my own tradition at Lehigh (possibly).

WaitingDad -

I probably did generalize too much about the “5%” thing, but it is an interesting statistic, nonetheless. Again, the same thing I said to hilldweller about legacies and siblings etc. can be said to you, and it is so cool that your three kids all choose to go to the same school! It says so much about the presence it has.

I emailed admissions and they told me they have no plans on pushing back the decision date and it still looks as if they’ll be on time for December 16th. The decision will be posted online this year, so I recommend you check out the Lehigh portal here –> [Lehigh University Portal Login](<a href=“Campus Portal Resources - Lehigh Confluence - LTS Knowledge Base”>Campus Portal Resources - Lehigh Confluence - LTS Knowledge Base)

In the past, my kids received their acceptances via both mail and the Lehigh portal. Letters appeared to have been mailed out prior to the portal notification and students in other parts of the U.S. posted online days before that they received their acceptance letters. We kept looking for the mailman coming down the street once we found out the letters were out. Talk about stress! The portal site played music on it if you were accepted back then. I don’t have any info that snail mail letters of acceptance have been discontinued but for $55,000 a year the school can afford the postage.

Thanks…I will let my son know. I am trying to relax about it…I am more nervous than he is. I just wonder if all ED’s are “good candidates” how do they make their decision…it must be very difficult. From reading these posts, all of the kids have good SAT’s, lots of EC’s and high GPA’s, etc…

Waiting Dad:
Were the acceptances just letters or were they large packets. I have heard from other people that if a “letter” comes it is most likely a negative…if a huge packet comes, it is a positive…thoughts??

RKMH23,
In 2006 and 2009 the acceptances were over-sized “packets” and not in just regular envelopes. It was strange how the west coast received their notification letters way before the east coast did. Lehigh does strongly favor ED candidates. I always thought applying ED was the equivalent of adding an extra 100 points to SAT scores but with the school’s recent popularity and strong applicant pool it may not add much. My oldest son says he would never be accepted now if he applied with his grades as the newer students are wow bright.

OK…now I am more nervous…LOL…my son has great EC’s - mostly music and some other things…but he is committed to ALL of his EC’s. They are not just things he belongs to, he participates fully - holds offices, etc. His SAT and ACT within range but not in the top of the range. He does have other schools he applied to…but he said if he gets accepted to Lehigh he is going even if he does not get any fin. aid. He just loves that school…like I said before he has grown up going to football and basketball games…and visiting the campus many, many times. Any other info you can pass along would be appreciated. That is strange about the west coast…maybe they do that because it takes longer to get mail to the west coast? We will either have a really great holiday break OR a terrible one…UGH!!!

RKMH23 -

I heard last year the acceptances came in small envelopes with just 2 pieces of paper whereas in the previous years they were in large envelopes. I guess what I’m saying is don’t worry if it’s an small envelope!

I would definitely prefer a letter to open rather than logging onto the portal, but whatever comes first will be how I learn of the decision! I believe it also comes with a financial aid estimate, correct?

ALSO, being involved in ECs is HUGE! And when I say involved I mean involved like you defined (committed, leadership, etc.) That says so much about your son’s work ethic, so much more than a test score could ever. Kudos to him! Maybe you shouldn’t be so worried?

Lehigh 2017 - thanks…when we attended one of the Lehigh days - Oct. 22nd, they had this singing group perform and they were amazing. My sons eyes lit up…he just loves that kind of thing. He also plays baseball, but won’t play for Lehigh, but he is hoping to play the club baseball. Yes, from what I understand the ED comes with the financial aid estimate. I will tell my son to check the portal on the 16th and afterwards…I wish you good luck and hopefully you will both be Lehigh students in the fall. Please keep me posted.

I suggest checking sites like Facebook and this one a few days before the 16th to see if any applicants received acceptance letters…just in case they still mail them out early.

The drill with some other schools this year has been letters and/or emails being sent out prior to the Dec 15 announcement dates expected so feel free to make yourselves crazy checking over and over. I know we are!

In 2008 (Class of 2013) ED applicants were notified BEFORE the 15th of December. The Lehigh portal gave out notifications 3 days earlier on Friday the 12th… so if the samer stays true then…1 WEEK TO GO!

"Thank you once again for your Early Decision application to Lehigh University. The Committee on Admission has been busy finalizing admissions decisions and letters will be in the mail by December 15.

This year we will also be posting decisions online. You may check your decision on the applicant portal starting December 13. Our records indicate that you have already opened and accessed your applicant portal account. Click here to access your portal account. Please remember that your User Name is the email address you provided to us in your application and your password is something you established yourself during the open process.

WaitingDad -

Where did you see that? It was an email? Because I don’t believe I got one! Anyway, thanks for sharing that, that’s pretty exciting :)

Or is that the one from 2008?

Thanks for the info…I have my son check in on the Portal next week. Good luck to everyone.

The e-mail was a copy of the one my kid received back in 2008. I don’t recall if a similar one went out in December of 2005. I do know the dates given out by Admissions are not exact.

I’m reading this thread and getting even more excited for December 13th and the days following. I’m hoping it’s good news, but even a defferal is better than a rejection. I’m just scared because I am below the GPA… I have been fretting all week about the day I get the letter or check the portal.

Good luck to all!!

(SO many engineering majors :P)

Retro -

Me too! And yes, ANYTHING but a rejection! What’s your GPA? And regardless, you won’t get denied just because your GPA is too low :)

I’m also applying to bioengineering, but I never took physics so that’s why I’m worried!
