I'm interested in Engineering and Business at Lehigh and want to ultimately go into the Business sector. Right now for a single degree I am more interested in an Industrial Engineering degree as opposed to a Business Degree. I like the idea of IDEAS (no pun intended) and IBE however the course load makes mes nervous. For IBE you need to take 137 credits, the most at Lehigh and for IDEA you need to take 136 credits. I would be doing Industrial Engineering and either a B.S. ECON from the college or accounting or econ from the business school. Since IE is a bit easier how heavy would this be?

137 credits, what would that be in terms of average number of classes per semester. What does this compare to the average of an Engineering students and a Business student. Also what is the average number of credits that the university as a whole requires?

IBE is definitely difficult but I know a lot of people that do it – You should have to remain focused. 137 Credits is between 17-18 Credits per semester (which is not an overload, it’s difficult but within the accepted realm of credits, on average people take 15-16 credits). To graduate I think you need 120 credits (I thought I heard somewhere it was 121 but I forget). Obviously if you came in with credit for stuff like English, Calc, Chem, etc. it’d be easier for you.

Also the average business-only student takes 15 credits per semester, Engineering I think ranges a lot, some take 15 (like freshman year most engineers I know took 15) but it might spike in later semesters.

If you’re interested in it you should definitely do it! That’s what matters most, if you aren’t interested in your program then it’ll be so much more difficult for you to get through it (and far less worth it).

Lehigh is a possible for me but not a safety. I feel like those Honors programs are for Ivy League rejects whose safety was Lehigh. IBE is much more competitive with only 50 kids a year, and IDEAS is not as competitive, but only has 25 students.
If I want to major in Industrial Engineering and compliment it with either econ with IDEAS or accounting or another program in the Business school, what do you think is more attractive for employers. Which one is “easier” and “less competitive”. Is IBE a lot more competitve than IDEAS?

My son is in the IBE program. He did apply to Cornell, but Lehigh certainly wasn’t his “safety.”

Don’t select a program based on which is easier or less competitive. Select a program that you have a passion for. It is what you will be doing for the next four years!

If you are interested in Lehigh, be sure and visit and register your visit with the Admissions office. Demonstrated interest is very important at Lehigh.

Also be open to other options, such as majoring in engineering and minoring in business, if you are concerned with 135+ credits.

Also remember that IBE is a BUSINESS degree - not an ABET engineering degree. A lot of the IBE kids double major in order to also have an engineering degree.
