So basically I need to decide whether to go to Lehigh or Virginia Tech for engineering. I know Vtech is ranked higher than Lehigh in engineering according to US news and world reports. However, Lehigh is also good in engineering and has other great programs, if I were to transfer out of engineering, that are well known, and pushes students to combine interests in their academic studies. I was somewhat impressed by Lehigh's Candidates day, but was concerned about what there would be to do after classes. Vtech seems to have more possibilities on a social scale, probably due to its size, and thats a prominent factor in my decision. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions?

It would help if you told us some about what you’re into :)

A very good friend of mine chose to go to VTech, and I to Lehigh.

There are plenty of post-class activities here: I chose to play on the rugby team. Now I go to Physical Therapy after class. Seriously though, there are a bunch of club and IM sports teams to get involved with. Plus UP and others things like that.

Lehigh’s late-night social scene is stronger than VTech’s from what my friend has told me.

Lehigh’s class size lends to a nicer learning experience as well. He’s got large classes whereas I’ve got small ones where I find it easier to pay attention and learn.

hi JohnLG, is there any particular type of engineering that you are planning to major in college?

Copaman: I am involved in martial arts quite a bit, and enjoy robotics and choir, and basically music (composition mostly) in general. I am mostly involved in civil/social rights clubs in school, but am always willing to try anything new.
I do have one other question/statement about Lehigh… I have heard that the Greek life is strong, but no one feels pressured to join or participate in parties, drinking, etc. (this was at the accepted students day) Is that true, or is it the complete opposite?

japanoko: Civil engineering would be my major, but that may change in the future

That is absolutely, 100% true.

We have some good clubs that you might be interested in but I am not sure about a robotics club. I think there is but I’m not sure.

thanks for the help, I will most likely be going to Lehigh, but my parents want to look at every factor imaginable before allowing me making a decision. One of those factors being the apparent racial issues at Lehigh. I know there are quite a lot of forums about this already, but is there a large racial problem, and if so are people taking action against racial issues there? There are also some problems at Vtech btw, since it is in the south and slightly in the middle of nowhere.

Also

There haven’t been any real racial things this year, asides from some guys doing Blackface for Halloween, but they didn’t really know it was bad.

I don’t see any kinds of strained racial relationships.

Did anyone read the blog about closing down the fraternity…towards the end of the comments it talks about prevalant and open hard drug use due to stricter alcohol policy. Is this the case? Is this like most colleges?

I am sure there are hard core drug users at Lehigh, there are everywhere - is it prevalent, I do not think so as my son has never mentioned it, but I will check with him.

He has never witnessed or heard of any racial problems. He has a diverse group of friends and they do alot together, eat, go to parties, play intramurals etc…

I went to a lot of parties held by fraternities and I never saw hard drug use. Not once… and I partied with frats 3-5 days a week for the whole first semester and the start of the second.

There will definitely be hard drug users at any college.

I do not believe that there is any more hard core drug use at Lehigh than at any other university.

Seriously, most of these kids work really hard, get good grades and find great jobs when they are done. They do not have time to use hard drugs. But I am sure there is a minority that does.

What you find at Lehigh are kids who are career oriented and hard working. They do party on the weekends but that happens at every other university in the country. I’m not really sure why it has this reputation. Classes are too hard and the kid next to you in class is so smart that you have to be on your toes all the time. There is no time to slack off.

hard to believe that Frats at Lehigh have parties on Sunday-Wednesday. I thought most of the parties were on Weekends

Tues Thurs Fri Sat … right there 4 days of partying and those are the usual days.

Throw in the occasional Wednesday party or Monday Night Football and you’re up to 5.

MoCos on Sunday if there’s a sports event.

I think most of the drug use, alcohol, and partying, are present at most college campuses, is it more prevalent at Lehigh than other colleges, or would I find the same amount of partying, drugs, etc. at any other college campus?

JohnLG - No you will not find more paryting and drugs at Lehigh than other campuses, in fact, many of my son’s friends go to schools where campus life is one big party. Lehigh students are pretty serious about their academics but also like to have fun - it is a balance.
