Lehigh - Parties

Hi everyone, I'm a high school senior and I'm really interested in attending Lehigh University. I like that it's known for having a great Greek scene with lots of fun parties, and I was wondering.. is that changing in the next couple of years?

I read in other forums about how strict it's becoming with crackdowns of Greek houses and under-age drinking citations because the administration is trying to take away the party school reputation.
Can someone tell me if Lehigh will still be a party school in the next couple of years?

Partying is not my only reason for looking at colleges, I've already considered everything else and this is just something on the side I've been wondering about; obviously I will balance my academics and social life in college as best as possible. If anyone that goes to Lehigh could answer questions about the parties that would be great, because I definitely want to have A LOT of fun in college and I hope Lehigh isn't changing as much as people are saying it is. I have a lot of friends in high school and we party a lot while keeping up good grades so I want to keep having a vibrant social life with lots of drinking and partying; it's just my idea of fun so I don't need people judging that on here.

Thanks!

Im also a senior applying and I feel the exact same way! Haha I definitely want a school with good parties. Like you said, its not a deciding factor but I still feel like the quality of the social life is important.

Lehigh is and always will be a fun, social school, but it is also a top engineering and business school, so…

Bottom line is that laws are enforced at Lehigh and they have had several hazing incidents involving underage drinking that were very close to being fatalities, so yes, for your protection, hazing and underage drinking on the hill are being addressed. I don’t expect that it will affect the average fun loving student or the number and quality of parties, however… there are some who carry it to an unsafe level.

Partying also depends very much on your major and career goals. I know my son does not have much time for it anymore…but I assure you, it’s still there!

I second what mumof2boyz said.

The partying is certainly there if you want it, but it’s completely avoidable if you’re not into it.

Lehigh is nowhere near as wild as it was in the past. I’ve heard truly ridiculous stories from alumni from the 1980s and 1990s. Back in those days, a majority of the student body was involved in social fraternities and drinking and hazing were commonplace. But now the number of students involved in social Greek life (not honors/professional societies) is around 30% and the drinking and hazing is being curtailed slightly.

I’m a little like mumof2boyz’s son - as an upperclassmen engineer, I don’t really have the time for partying. I’m not at Lehigh for the drinking, I’m there for the engineering degree and the world-class education.

Let me pose a question to the first two posters (collegequestion9 and kellyxw). Think about this before you apply to Lehigh:

How does drinking/partying automatically equate to a good college social life?

Best,

collegequestion9 - Just wanted to add that the best way to find out if you like the Lehigh experience and to check out the social partying scene first hand, is to stay for a few days, over a weekend. You can probably arrange to stay in a dorm through the admissions department. I do know from my son that there was quite a bit of partying first semester freshman year, it slowed a bit for most when grades were posted. For upperclassmen, it tends to be contained to the weekends due to schoolwork, co-ops etc… Of course, there are always exceptions! Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks so much guys! It makes me feel a lot better, you’re right though that those strict rules aren’t gonna change the school that much overall and there will still be parties. Thanks everyone for answering, and yes I do plan on studying very hard as well. mumof2boyz thanks for the tip on staying over the weekend, I’ll try to do that!
