Lehigh Science Program?

I am a high school junior considering majoring in Biology. I think I have a good chance of being accepted to Lehigh. I was wondering if anyone on this board can give me any info about Lehigh's Science program. Is it a good place to be a Science major?

Yes, Lehigh is good for the sciences, but compared to what? The biology program, for one, is supposed to be very, very good; however, if you got into Lehigh and, say, Johns Hopkins, Johns Hopkins might be better.

Thanks, I am considering majoring in Biology. I don’t think my SAT scores are high enough for Johns Hopkins, also I really didn’t feel very safe in the area surrounding the university. I am also considering Villanova and Boston College. So I those are the schools I am comparing.

lehigh is definitely more prestigious and well-known and has a better science program than villanova.

lehigh and BC are on par for biology. lehigh’s biology program is known to be extremely difficult, but those who are pre-med usually get into very good medical schools.

if you’re not interested in medical school, a BC degree in bio will hold more weight in new england, while a lehigh degree will hold more weight in the philly/new york/new jersey region

lehighgirl, with such strong engineering department, I would have imagined that Lehigh was strong in the sciences, but, although many of the rankings place certain Lehigh engineering departments in the top 20, the science department rankings are way down there…glad to see that it does have a good science reputation otherwise.

this gives you an idea of how many students received Bachelors degrees from Lehigh in 2008-2009 by department:

JohnAdams12, can you show an example where the science rankings are “way down there”…?

tribegirl09, take a look at the link below. it gives a partial list of medical, grad schools and companies lehigh grads go to after college. BC doesn’t seem to publish one. you could also ask someone from lehigh admissions to try to get you a full list of this information.

lehighgal, sure, no problem. There aren’t many undergraduate programs other than engineering and business that are ranked, so I had to look at the graduate programs and assumed that there is some relevancy with the undergraduate programs.

Lehigh’s graduate rankings for the sciences, from USNWR, here you are:

Chemistry - #123
Physics - #93
Biology - #195
Math - #89
Earth Sciences - #63
Computer Science - #99

and these are the undergrad rankings for Lehigh in areas that it is highly ranked:

17 Industrial Engineering

18 Civil Engineering

20 Mechanical Engineering

27 Business (from BusinessWeek)

I would have to disagree with the relationships between undergrad and graduate science programs just for the sole reason that Lehigh does not have a medical school, so it’s graduate biology and chemistry programs are not going to have the resources that a university with a medical school would have. The undergraduate programs are known to be the hardest majors alongside engineering and accounting at Lehigh. We are also a small school that is heavily focused on undergraduates- not graduate students.

lehigh, I would agree with you on the graduate/undergraduate relationships

by the way, here the Graduate school in Engineering is ranked 12th in the country:
